The Cisco Kid (DVD)
This western television series depicts the exploits of the Cisco Kid (Duncan Renaldo), based upon a character from the O. Henry short story collection HEART OF THE WEST (1907). The Cisco Kid was portrayed in many early films, including IN OLD ARIZONA (1928), for which Warner Baxter as the Cisco Kid won the second Academy Award for Best Actor. Renaldo first played the part in a 1945 Monogram theatrical feature, THE CISCO KID RETURNS. Viewed as outlaws by lawmen, the impoverished looked upon the flamboyantly dressed Cisco Kid and his amusing companion Pancho (Leo Carillo) as courageous heroes. This compilation contains 15 full-color episodes from the series: Chain Lightning, Confessions for Money, Freight Line Feud, Water Rights, The Old Bum, Dog Story, Stolen Bonds, Ghost Town, Lynching Story, Uncle Disinherits Niece, Protective Association, Spanish Dagger, Phony Heiress, Phony Sheriff, and Water Well Oil.

Kid Blink Beats The World
In 1899, Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst put the squeeze on the boys who sold their newspapers by raising the price that the newsboys paid for a paper by a penny. This was devastating for the newsies, mostly impoverished immigrant children who used the money they made from selling newspapers to help feed their families. The newspaper sellers went on strike, led by a colorful group of newsies with picturesque nicknames like Kid Blink, Crutch Morris, Tiny Tim, and Race Track Higgins. The New York Times and the New York Tribune didn't raise their prices and escaped a strike while gleefully reporting their competitors' anguish at exhaustive length. The Times's and Tribune's lavish coverage frequently centered on Kid Blink and his supposedly fractured dese, dem, and dose English. The strike was a violent nightmare, with Pulitzer and Hearst bringing in armed thugs to bring the boys to heel. A comprehensive bibliography augments lively prose and illustrations.
